10 Filmmakers in the spotlight at the Whistler Film Festival

This year marked the 10th anniversary of the Whistler Film Festival and in commemoration they honored 10 influential Canadian Filmmakers : Julia Kwan, Atom Egoyan, Luc Dery, Bruce McDonald, Ron Mann, Jacob Tierney, Elizabeth Yake, Daniel Cross and Tygh Runyan.  I did a piece on these 10 filmmakers in the spotlight.  Check out the video below to learn what George Strombolopolous’ ski bum name would be and what inspires Bruce McDonald to make film.

Every year I go to the Whistler Film Festival it gets better.  This intimate festival is in an awesome location.  There are so many great films, panels, parties and of course mountains to explore during the festival.  It’s always challenging to decide what to do next.  I got quite a bit in during my time at the Festival.  Coffee and inspiration somehow got me through the late nights and early mornings.

I headed up Wednesday to catch the beautiful opening film Daydream Nation.  The Industry Summit started early the next day and included panels on Navigating the Digital Domain, International Financing & Distribution and The Future of Content.  A highlight during the Summit was the Filmmaker Luncheon.  I had the opportunity to lunch with Monte Hellman (who there to receive a tribute and screen his new film), Larysa Kondracki (director of the Borsos award-winning film The Whistlerblower), Mike Goldbach (director of Daydream Nation) and Dany Papineau (director of the closing night film Two Frogs in the West).

Then there were the parties….a highlight this year was the BC Film party at the Nita Lake Lodge.  The Lodge is a trek out of the village but it is worth it and STUNNING!  The Brightlight party at Araxi is always a good time with awesome seafood but it didn’t make getting up for the celebrity ski challenge the next morning easy.  I wasn’t planning on snowboarding during the festival, but the amazing media team hooked me up with geared and I hit the mountain.  It turned out to be a perfect day to be on Blackcomb and we managed to get in some runs between the ski challenge and awards lunch.  The only disappointment of the day was the fact that we lost our interview with Atom Egoyan because our camera froze on the mountain.

The perfect way to unwind after a full day of sun and snowboarding was hitting up the First Weekend Club gift lounge.  I enjoyed an apres glass of wine on a comfy Crystal Lake couch while the First Weekend Club loaded me up with a bag of goodies.  After that we only had a couple of hours to unwind before heading to the world premiere of Bruce McDonald’s Hard Core Logo 2.

Sunday I was pretty beat and after the awards brunch I headed straight to the Scandinavian Spa (thanks to the First Weekend Club!).  Soaking in the outdoor pools and contemplating the mountains was the perfect way to unwind after a very fun and full festival.
